Best Walk or Run Event: Especially for You

The Especially for You Race Against Breast Cancer was founded by Mercy Medical Center and General Mills, and is dedicated to the memory of Sandy Knight, a woman who lost her fight against breast cancer in 1991. This year’s 5K run/walk event will be held Oct. 1 in Cedar Rapids. The race starts at 8 a.m. just outside the Hall-Perrine Cancer Center on the Mercy Medical Center campus and finishes in the NewBo District. “No matter where you’re at in the journey, it’s a day to come and celebrate,” said Michelle Cole, EFY race director. “It has so much meaning for so many different people.”

Race organizers expect approximately 16,000 registrations this year. Last year 15,558 people participated and supported the EFY fund, which is used locally to provide financial assistance for breast-care services such as mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies and imaging. Financial assistance for services related to gynecological cancer screenings and testing are now included as well. Since 2008, EFY has helped more than 5,000 people in the community access more than 10,000 services.
