UI Health Care opens ALS clinic in Des Moines

Several health care organizations have joined forces to treat patients diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, as University of Iowa Health Care opened a dedicated ALS clinic in Clive today.

The clinic was developed through collaboration between Mercy Medical Center Des Moines, UnityPoint Health – Des Moines and University of Iowa Health Care.

The ALS outreach clinic will occur on the first Monday of each month. Specialists point out that locating the clinic in central Iowa helps makes it more convenient for patients and their families to receive care.

Thanks to the success of the Ice Bucket Challenge, UI Health Care will receive a grant from the ALS Association that will help support patient care in the clinic

The clinic will be held in the Mercy West Building, located at 1601 NW 114th St. in Clive. Patients and families can contact the University of Iowa Health Care ALS program at (319) 356-8958.
