How exciting! This has been a long time in coming. Bravo to the board for years of progressive thinking that honors the roots of the co-op and its current members' needs and demands.

How will you funnel sunlight from above with office space and condos built on top of the store? The reality is that this location isn't really the best or only available property for New Pi to achieve their stated goals with a new IC store. The Co-op could build a better building, much like the Seward Co-op, on another downtown or near-downtown parcel. The board (with the exception of Caroline Dieterle, who has dissented) is not being entirely open-minded and honest in pitching this project to membership as "must approve or else" kind of deal.

Also, the media is doing a very poor job of making the distinction that there will be a public RFP process for proposals for this site. It's far from a done deal, despite what the Co-op would like folks to believe.

While the Iowa City Bike Library will mourn the loss of its location downtown, New Pi's proposal looks awesome. And the ICBL will live on elsewhere and close by!

A new, bigger, and energy-efficient New Pi store is the goal--and Seward gives
us a good example to emulate. Also, just for accuracy's sake, it has not yet been decided if the new building would house the Co-op's administrative offices. We own the current location, which is within shouting distance of the proposed new site, is also just upstairs from the National Cooperative Grocers Association's national headquarters, and has been remodeled to suit the needs of our staff there. The new site will house offices of store managers, which are now located in the former Bookery building on Iowa Avenue, but not necessarily the overall administrative operations for the Co-op as a whole. That remains to be seen.

Just want to be clear that New Pi will be looking at the Seward Co-op model for the sustainable technology used to make their store super efficient. Grocery stores really gobble up the energy. As stated in the article, the exterior design is another matter. We are definitely looking to add plenty of natural light and to engage with the Chauncey Swan park and the IC Farmers Market. I'm going to say that in all likelihood our exterior will not be nearly so bold as Seward. But bravo to them for making a statement!
