New to the list this year is MD Molding, a sister company of Wayland-based MD Orthopaedics, which produces braces and shoes for clubfoot patients.

MD Molding is the injection molding side of the business.

“The growth of MD Molding can be directly attributed to the fact that we have shifted from outsourcing to insourcing our part design, mold creation and injection molding,” Emily Ferguson, business manager of MD Orthopaedics, stated in an email. “We are able to have complete control over each piece manufactured from conception to completion, which results in a superior part.”

John Mitchell, founder of both companies, invented a clubfoot brace for children who use the Ponseti method. The method was developed by Ignacio Ponseti, a physician who until his death in 2009, treated thousands of patients with clubfoot at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

During its first year of business in 2004, MD Orthopaedics produced 73 braces. By 2008, it was shipping more than 6,000 braces to more than 60 countries.
