Over the past year, UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Hospital has not only expanded its facilities, it has recruited enough professionals to staff them. “Since January 2016, we’ve recruited 60 new providers – that’s huge,” UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids President and CEO Ted Townsend said. “Roughly 40 of those are new providers to our community.”
The health system’s major projects completed in 2017 include the new UnityPoint Clinic Family Medicine Westdale in southwest Cedar Rapids, the expansion of UnityPoint Clinic Marion and the reopening of a clinic in Shellsburg with a new facility. “All of these are aimed at continuing to expand our primary care footprint, because we think that is the beginning of all of the future, so we’re making a big investment there,” Mr. Townsend said. “Getting the people to put in these buildings to expand and improve access is probably at the top of my list as far what we’re proud of in the last year. Expansions are the visible part that everybody can see, but they don’t do us any good if we can’t hire the people.”
