IOWA CITY – The Java House, an Iowa City owned and operated chain of coffee shops, announced today it is opening Heirloom Salad Co., at 211 E. Washington St.
The location is the former home of longtime retailer Vortex, most recently Lyla’s Boutique and is next door to Java House’s 211 ½ E. Washington St. shop.
Heirloom Salad Co. will open April 25 and will be a quick-service restaurant. Heirloom Salad Co. and the Java House will share a 6-foot walkway and a common cash register system so customers can order from either or both companies.
Heirloom Salad will feature made to order, custom chopped or hand-tossed salads, a made-to-order pan tossed pasta bar, six daily soups and offer specialty sandwiches prepared to order. Prepared salads, layered cakes, sweets, fruit and beverages will be available, as well. Delivery of Heirloom Salad items will be available within 60 days of opening.
The businesses will share seating for 175. Java House is also adding a private guest seating in the rear of the existing space for private reservation up to 20. The space is equipped for professional meetings.
Heirloom Salad’s concept is based on providing fresh, healthy ingredients made-to-order, with 50 salad ingredients and 15 salad dressings. Customers will be charged by the number of ingredients, not weight of the salad.
Soups will be made fresh daily from a rotation of more than 50 recipes by executive chef Sam Kron, who most recently served as chef at the Shelter House. Four pastas and six sauces will also be available. Sandwiches will be made withKoberoast beef and pastrami, served on six breads.
The restaurant will feature an early 1900’s downtown ambiance, with vintage Line berry carts and early 1900sIowa Cityphotographs.
