No. 5 Large Company: UICCU

Teamwork, recognition and commitment to the community and coworkers are just a few reasons the University of Iowa Community Credit Union is a cool place to work, according to its employees.

UICCU is a member-owned financial cooperative with 10 office locations. Since being organized in 1938, UICCU has grown to $2 billion in assets and serves nearly 106,000 members.

Its new headquarters, visible from Interstate 380, opened in North Liberty late last year.

The company’s core values include: truth, trust, mentoring, openness, risk taking, giving credit, integrity, caring and respect.

“After being in the retail world for 15 years, coming to UICCU three years ago was a breath of fresh air,” an employee stated in the nomination for Coolest Places to Work. “Everyone is willing to go that extra step to make you feel at home and help you along your journey. We have a great team of trainers that encourages each new employee to have fun and to feel free to genuinely express themselves. The entire credit union gets together once each month to celebrate our successes and encourage each employee to keep doing what we do best – take care of our membership and each other.”

At every staff meeting, employees at the University of Iowa Community Credit Union who exceed expectations are recognized and celebrated. For example, ice cream coupons (the Ben and Jerry’s Award) are given out to employees who go above and beyond.

Employees are encouraged to give back to the community by volunteering and donating to charities. They also help their own coworkers when in need.

“They give back a lot to the communities that we work in,” stated another employee in a nomination. “That has encouraged us to give back and assist those in need within the company. We have employees or their families struggling with cancer or other health issues. There have been a number of fund raisers to assist those families in need. Collections were taken at Christmas to ensure families had a Christmas to remember, in case it was the last with all their loved ones.”
