North Carolina-based Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. today announced the opening of nine service centers in new and existing markets, including one in Cedar Rapids.

The 835 Thompson Way SW facility sits on nine acres and has 44 doors. One of Old Dominion’s 239 strategically-located service centers, the Cedar Rapids location will employ 27 and cover freight needs for Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids, Dyersville, Iowa City, Manchester, Mount Pleasant and Waterloo.

It is among four service centers located throughout Iowa, joining centers in Des Moines, Mason City and Sioux Falls.

Old Dominion officials said its investment will support capacity needs, improve shipping time, and enhance delivery flexibility.

“Even during an unprecedented time, we will continue to invest in our network and look for additional ways to improve our operations,” said Chip Overbey, senior vice president of strategic planning, in a release. “Our goal is to build capacity to win market share, while shortening response time and transit times. Our investments align with our long-term strategic plan of investing in our business.”

Old Dominion said service centers are built with future growth in mind, including room to increase door-count, potential to hire additional employees, and equipment to leverage the latest technology.

“Our newest service centers are integral to Old Dominion Freight Line’s operations, accommodating unique customer needs and shipping higher volumes of goods,” Mr. Overbey said. “We will continue to invest in long-term solutions to help our customers keep their promises.”

The company also announced new service centers in Butte, Montana; Conroe, Texas; Jonesboro, Arkansas; Lafayette, Indiana; LaGrange, Georgia; Rochester, New York; and Rock Island and University Park in Illinois. CBJ
